Thailand is a travelling destination for young and old, and has long been a popular Asian favourite for Europeans and Americans alike. Thailand is home to many natural borders with neighboring countries including the mountainous terrain of its border with with Myanmar to the north and west, a long stretch of the Mekong River separating Thailand from Laos to the north and east as well as the Mekong River and further mountain ranges between it and Cambodia to the east.

The Isan region of Northeastern Thailand is the most populous region of Thailand (with the exception of Bangkok) and features a number of bustling provincial capital cities. Rich in natural resources, there are over one hundred national parks in the country and lots of opportunities for trekking, mountain biking, photography, camping and scuba diving. The beaches are one of the major draws for visitors, and these are home to some of the most famous all-night parties in the world. In fact, beaches are often highlights of a trip to the country – particularly Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi and Krabi. Aside from this, Bangkok is another top visitor attraction and is widely considered one of the top hotspots of the whole country. The so-called ‘City of Angels’ has an abundance of markets, malls, wonderful sights and temples – as well as a fantastic nightlife scene. The riverside is best explored by river taxi or speedboat – the perfect way to wind down after a long day of shopping and sight-seeing.

Driving in the city is relatively easy compared with some other major Asian cities, and the installation of the modern skytrain has meant that traffic is now even lighter. Most drivers are polite and considerate. On rural roads there is a lot of freedom, although be aware that these are mostly one way.
