St. Kitts and Nevis
Quite unlike any other islands in the Caribbean, St Kitts and Nevis islands are particularly spectacular and unique places in their own right. Indeed, watching the sun fall over the tropical waters, you may be forgiven for thinking that you have stumbled into paradise. St. Kitts and Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern part of the Caribbean, and are only separated by a two mile channel. Formerly pearls of the British Caribbean, Nevis was famed for its sugar production industry. However, amidst this lush vegetation and wonderful scenery – including the Mount Liamuiga on St Kitts – you will certainly find something to take your breath away. St. George's Anglican Church, which was built by the French in the seventeenth century, is a fascinating insight into this culture. Originally referred to as the Nôtre Dame, it was rebuilt in 1704 after devastation after which it was given its name in homage to the English Patron Saint. Nevis similarly has a fascinating history and links to Nevis and links to Horatio Nelson are kept alive in the local Museum which has a great exhibition celebrating the life and works of this famous man.
Basseterre and Charlestown, the islands' capitals, are among the most charming of the Caribbean's former colonial towns, and are renowned for the generosity of the locals. Very much focussed on the outdoors, as you would expect, you can indulge in a slew of activities – from hiking in the rain forests, to golfing, fishing, boating and diving or snorkelling through underwater reefs and unexplored wrecks.
Aside from these pursuits, it is also very interesting to observe the history that is prevalent in this culture. This includes several restored fortresses, plantations, and ancient petro glyphs. Hiring a car here is sure to make your visit more comfortable and enjoyable
