A far from undiscovered tourist mecca, Montenegro has it all – from delightful beaches to a vibrant entertainment scene – you are sure to find something that will stimulate you in this diverse and beautiful country. With borders including Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania, it also makes the ideal starting point for a tour of these other parts of the region – as well as a flavour of their influences throughout. Herceg Novi's old town is renowned for its jewellery shops and artists' galleries, so should prove particularly interesting for those who lean towards the arts. Podgorica is particularly good for shopping.
The most significant cultural monuments of the country include the UNESCO recognized town of Kotor, and the village of the Petrovic dynasty, Njegusi. From these areas, you are well placed to take tours into the Boka Kotorska Bary and Skadar Lake. For those who love hills and scenery, Montenegro should prove a paradise – you can visit mountains including Durmitor, Bjelasic, Komovi and Visitor – all of which are populated with spectacular views, flora and fauna and terrific natural landscapes. Outdoor sports are particularly popular, and you can choose from climbing, water rafting and hiking amongst other activities. There are also several National Parks for nature lovers – these include the Biogradska Fora and the area close to Lake Skadar, which is Europe’s largest bird sanctuary. Hiring a car will be more than worthwhile during a trip here, and you can take advantage of some stunning drives along the Adriatic coast, which is dotted with lovely medieval villages. Be sure to check out Ostrog Monastery, which is one of the most ‘curious’ places in the country – and one where miracles are said to happen on an almost daily basis. Food lovers should also try some of the regular markets that are held around the towns throughout the year
