As the world’s only Grand Duchy, Luxembourg has always been something special. Renowned for its laidback atmosphere and gorgeous scenery, it is a great place for a weekend or as a stop-gap for visiting neighbouring countries.
The city of Luxembourg, which shares this name, is an impressive city which can be accessed from many bridges and makes for an excellent driving tour. Another highly recommended building to visit is the Philharmonic, which is a spectacular modern structure in the Kirchberg Quarter, in between all the EU-buildings. It's organic forms and colonnade screen makes it an interesting and exciting building to watch. Renowned for their laidback attitude to life, the locals will likely treat you like you are their own – indeed, it is hard not to feel at home here. Winding away from Luxembourg, you would be well placed to take a tour out to other parts of the country. Vianden, which is widely regarded as the Pearl of the Ardenns, is a medieval town which is near the German border and is one of the most popular places for tourists to visit on a tour of the country, giving as it does picturesque views of the medieval castle over-looking the hills on the outskirts of the town.
Much of the national culture and cuisine is linked to French and German influences, with specialities including beers such as the famous Pils – so be sure to leave some room for these should you be interested! Driving in Luxembourg is relatively straightforward, and within easy reach of other major European destinations including Paris and Metz. The roads are well designed and you can be sure to take in some of the best sites – including the picturesque countryside - by personal vehicle.
