Home to a clash of cultures, Costa Rica is located in Central America and was originally the point where the Mesoamerican and South American native cultures met, and others in the mix include the Nahuatl and the Chibcha peoples, as well as African influences along the Atlantic coast during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It really spoils visitors for choice, offering them everything they could wish for – from beautiful beaches, to wildlife parks. Indeed, it is one of the worlds’ most popular destinations amongst bio-conscious tourists for these very reasons. Furthermore, Costa Rica is unique among all nations for its ‘unarmed’ political democracy and ‘green’ economic revolution.
The capital is San Jose and while it was historically an agriculturally driven city it is now a blossoming and remarked on city for the whole of Central America. While it is not the most beautiful city in the world – given some rather poor attempts at architectural maintainance during the nineteen fifties and sixties – it is a great place to start your exploration of the country. Some of the dangerous areas mean that hiring a car is particularly recommended here, partly for safety purposes.
However, San Jose is not a real representation of the country as a whole, it could be argued. There are some veritable paradises for beaches. Given the line of coast that is next to the Caribbean, there are a great number of excellent spots for sun worshippers to pick and choose from. Additional highlights include the delightful cuisine from various parts of the country, which varies from region to region. Aside from the above, you can also sample some adrenaline-pumping activities on a trip here – from snorkelling and kayaking at Cocos Island to the Southern Pacific Coast – hiring a car will enable you to make the best out of the country on your tour here.
