Antigua and Barbuda

Boasting beautiful coastlines and gorgeous climates, Antigua and Barbuda are neighbouring islands in the middle of the Leeward groups of islands in the Eastern Carribean. Antigua is the largest of the English-speaking Leewards, which makes it particularly easy for travellers from the UK and Europe. While largely flat, Antigua’s highest peak is located in the southwestern corner. Both Antigua and Barbuda share a capital, St John’s, which is located on Antigua. There are three hundred and sixty-five beaches on Antigua – which means one for each day of the year, and a paradise on earth. Barbuda’s beaches contrast stunningly from Antigua’s thanks to the coral influence – which are popular with snorkelers and divers from all over the world. Most Antiguans are of African heritage, and during the eighteenth century it was significant port and even referred to as the ‘gateway to the Carribean’. In 1967, Antigua and Barbuda, as well as their little sister island, Redonda, became members of the British Commonwealth. St John's, however, is dominated by the gorgeous white baroque towers of its own cathedral – which might seem out of place given the heritage of the country.

Antigua and Barbuda are very ‘activity-orientated’ choices for holiday makers, and renting a car will mean that you can make the most of your stay here; you can easily dot around to some of the many beaches and enjoy other outdoor activities such as yachting, golfing and hiking with ease. Along the Northeast Coast, at Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay on Antigua, there are some of the most highly recommended of the tourist beaches and there's also English harbour for great nautical interest (including British Naval history).
A visit here will also provide ample opportunity to enjoy some for the best quality dives in the Caribbean; a must for sport enthusiasts. The national flag for Antigua says it all about this stunning country – yellow, to represent the sun and the era of independence. Black, for the heritage from Africa. Blue for optimism and red for the vitality of the people – with a proud ‘V’ for victory. Antigua and Barbuda will surely score a victory over your heart when you visit.
