Eventually, the Moors took over this region and named it “Alicante” which means “city of lights” in Arabic language. Finally in 1246, the city was conquered once again and ruled by the Castilian King, Alfonso X. Later, during Franco’s rule in the 1950s, Alicante suffered a lot, as did the rest of Spain. However, despite the suffering, it slowly began to build itself as a tourist city. Many hotels and restaurants were built along the shoreline. Today, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the southern part of Spain. It is a place where people from all over the world come to visit each year.
